The Superliga it is already a reality, and the highest body of European football is seeing how the future darkens if this competition devised by a few clubs finally takes place, of the richest of the old continent, who seek to further fill their coffers.

Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Inter de Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City y Tottenham They are the architects of this initiative that has not done well for the rest of the clubs, who believe that this movement is the beginning of the end of this sport.

The criticism that the Superliga exceed the limits of the merely football. In fact, even most of the political sphere of several countries has been positioned totally against.

But, How will this new tournament that is generating so much controversy? We explain it to you below.

Member teams

To all of the twelve clubs mentioned above, who are the founders, three more teams are expected to join. It is rumored that they could be Bayer Munich, Borussia Dortmund o Paris Sant Germain, but they would not see with very good eyes leaving aside the current Champions League format.

In any case, the premise to be achieved is that Superliga is composed of 15 fixed equipment, more 5 invited teams that would access each edition based on their sporting merits harvested in other competitions.

A mixed competition format

The Superliga it would have two parts: a regular league phase and a knockout-based final phase. The regular phase would start in two groups of 10 teams that would face ‘all against all’, in back and forth matches until completion 18 journeys.

Later, the top three finishers in each group would go directly to the quarterfinals, while the fourth and fifth classified would have to play their place in a playoff. The quarters and semifinals would be played in a double confrontation, while the final would be a single match.

As of today the start date is unknown, which is estimated for the season 2022/23, but it is affirmed that Superliga would start in August and end in May, and the games would be played on Wednesdays.

UEFA is threatening

The UEFA wants to prevent this idea from going ahead, and has threatened exemplary sanctions for clubs and players, those that he would leave without competing in their respective domestic leagues and without being able to represent his team.
